Tailgating at Home
The 2020 college football season may be different, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a tailgate party at home. If you’re a fan of the University of Florida, we have a special cocktail that will keep you in the spirit of the game. Meet “The Gator” – a delightful blend of Florida Vodka, Orange Gatorade (invented by UF), and Lemon Juice. To add a touch of sweetness, we’ll be using homemade vanilla simple syrup. This drink is like an adult Creamsicle, perfect for cheering on the Gators. So grab your ingredients, put on your team colors, and let’s get mixing! Go Gators!
What You’ll Need
When it comes to finding the perfect vodka for The Gator, Florida offers a variety of options that will make your taste buds dance. For great value, we recommend Coast Vodka by Kozuba and Sons Distillery. Not only is this vodka smooth and enjoyable, but a portion of each sale also goes towards supporting the Florida Conservation Association. Plus, it comes in an affordable 1.75L box, so it’s friendly to both your wallet and Florida’s coastline.
If you’re looking for a more premium option, we suggest E11even Vodka by Miami Rum Company. This ultra-smooth vodka is the official vodka of the E11even nightclub in Miami and is produced by Toast Distillers, one of the few black-owned distilling companies.

What would a University of Florida cocktail be without Gatorade? Invented by the University of Florida, Gatorade has become a staple for athletes worldwide. It all started when the Gators football coach teamed up with UF’s College of Medicine to find a solution for heat stroke and dehydration among the players. The result was a formula filled with crucial components like salt, carbohydrates, and electrolytes. And thus, Gatorade was born.
To give The Gator cocktail its vibrant UF orange color, we recommend using orange Gatorade. While the full sugar version works perfectly, you can also opt for the lower sugar alternatives.

To elevate the flavor of The Gator, we’ll be using homemade vanilla simple syrup. Don’t worry; it’s incredibly easy to make! When combined with the orange Gatorade, this simple syrup gives the cocktail a delightful Creamsicle-like taste.
With the sweetness of the drink, a touch of lemon juice is essential to provide balance. If you can find Florida lemons, that’s fantastic! Otherwise, lemons from California will do just fine. To extract the juice efficiently, we recommend using a citrus press like the Zulay Premium Citrus Press.

Serve The Gator in any tumbler glass you have on hand. We prefer using a double rocks glass (also known as a double old fashioned glass), as it’s versatile and suitable for various cocktails.
