And, let’s not forget about the captivating performances of Jeannette Fischer as the Witch Grignote and Dima Biwab as the Pink Fairy and the Sandman.
The Story Unfolds
In this adaptation, Hansel and Gretel find themselves in a dreary and impoverished world. However, their bond as siblings and the innocence of their laughter and games provide a glimmer of hope. Their empty bellies give rise to whimsical visions of sugar and chocolate, where they brave their authoritarian mother and childish fears to discover the wonders within the clutches of the Witch Grignote. It truly is a fairy tale come to life.
Engelbert Humperdinck’s opera draws its delicate tenderness not only from the Grimm brothers’ dark adaptation of the popular fairy tale but also from the heartfelt libretto written by Adelheid Wette, the affectionate sister of the composer. Humperdinck, deeply influenced by his revered friend Richard Wagner, infused his music with his own imaginative touch, creating a tapestry of melodies, laughter, rounds, and dances for Hansel and Gretel to joyfully frolic upon.
With Emmanuelle Bastet’s direction, Barbara de Limburg’s set design, and François Thouret’s lighting, the stage comes to life, transporting the audience into the enchanting world of “Hansel and Gretel.” The performances of Vincent Le Texier as Pierre, Eva Vogel as Gertrude, Marie Lenormand as Hansel, and Norma Nahoun as Gretel are sure to captivate and inspire. Accompanied by the Maîtrise de la Perverie, conducted by Gilles Gérard, the Chœur d’Angers Nantes Opéra, led by Xavier Ribes, and the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire, conducted by Thomas Rösner, this production promises an unforgettable experience.
