Book Recommendations: Seishi Yokomizo’s Murder Mystery Novels!

by Assessor

Hi there, fellow readers! Are you in need of a thrilling and captivating read? Look no further than Seishi Yokomizo’s incredible murder mystery novels! These translated Japanese books are jam-packed with chilling tales, intriguing characters, and mind-boggling plot twists that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I recently delved into Yokomizo’s works and couldn’t help but be drawn into a world of gore, horror, and lunacy. Let me share my thoughts on these gripping novels with you!

The Honjin Murders

Let’s start with “The Honjin Murders.” This was the first book I picked up, and while I was initially determined to love it, I found myself facing some obstacles. The main issue for me was the difficulty in visualizing certain aspects of the story. This is likely due to the cultural differences and the inherent Japanese elements present in the original text. Nonetheless, despite these challenges, the book still managed to captivate me with its unique narrative style. Although not entirely to my taste, I appreciated the experimentation in this crime novel. Overall, I rate “The Honjin Murders” with 3 out of 5 stars.

The Inugami Curse

Now, let’s move on to what I consider the quintessential murder mystery novel, “The Inugami Curse.” This book had all the ingredients for a perfect thriller: a wealthy businessman’s death, a chaotic family left in disarray by his last will, and a string of shocking incidents that will leave you breathless. With a multitude of characters, Yokomizo provides a character list at the beginning of the book, making it easier for readers to keep track. The writing style in this book differs from “The Honjin Murders,” as it unfolds the mystery in the present. This change made the story even more exciting and enjoyable for me. However, it’s essential to note that this book contains graphic violence and trigger warnings for sensitive readers. Yet, it is precisely the psychopathic and dysfunctional nature of the characters that adds depth and intrigue to the story. “The Inugami Curse” receives a well-deserved 5 out of 5 stars from me!

The Village of Eight Graves

Lastly, let’s dive into “The Village of Eight Graves.” Unlike the previous two books, this one takes a different approach. It starts with an intriguing foundation, revolving around a curse and a protagonist haunted by their own father, a notorious mass murderer. With high expectations set in motion, the story unfortunately falls short of its potential. The pace feels slow, and the lack of clues or hints to guess the killer’s identity dampens the excitement. Nevertheless, there are elements that redeem the book, such as the enchanting setting of secret caves and a treasure hunt for gold coins. Additionally, the presence of a narrator and limited appearances by our beloved detective, Kosuke Kindaichi, adds a fresh spin to the narrative. For these reasons, I rate “The Village of Eight Graves” with 4 out of 5 stars.

So, my dear readers, these are my thoughts on Seishi Yokomizo’s murder mystery novels. I hope you find the excitement and intrigue that I experienced within their pages. If you’re craving a suspenseful and engaging read, these books should definitely be at the top of your reading list.
