MODA members: Are you facing a fashionista brain freeze with how to do formal color blocking at the MODA Color Theory fashion shows this weekend? Are you overwhelmed with the endless options a color-blocked dress code has to offer? Never fear! We’ve taken examples of your fellow MODA members at the color blocking photo shoot and used Polyvore to show you how to achieve these fabulous looks at affordable prices.

MODA Designer Allison pulled off a color-blocked outfit using three bold colors. She made it work by wearing patterned tights that are in the same color family as her studded peep-toes. The red, teal, and purple are complimentary colors. Another color combo that would look good is bright orange, hot pink, and turquoise. Notice how the waist tie-belt gives the silhouette structure while the fun ruffled bag pulls the entire look together. Our Polyvore version is very similar to Allison’s look.

We loved MODA Executive Board/Designer Ashley’s fresh twist on color blocking using neutrals! Her gray lace bustier tube top looks exquisite with a contrasting pleated satin ankle-length skirt. The neutral lace-up booties compliment the soft gray and rose tones featured in the outfit. Our Polyvore version of the outfit utilizes gray as its main neutral with accessories that compliment the bright tones seen in the bustier top.

MODA Chair Ashley’s nautical color blocking is so on trend right now. The midnight blue shoes that match the blouse tie her perfectly balanced outfit together. The white cigarette pants are essential for spring, and the gold jewelry gives the look a retro twist. Our Polyvore ensemble has similar color themes – each accessory specifically accentuates a color used in the blouse. Notice all of our outfit’s jewelry is silver; be wary of mixing silver and gold pieces while color blocking – the outfit is already quite busy with color.

This lovely MODA Public Relations/Blog Committee member uses complimentary spring tones to effectively color block. Her slouchy peach tank ties in with her nude pumps, which are complimented by the fitted coral pencil skirt. Our Polyvore version features a fitted silk tank with a beautifully sheer coral high-low skirt (a HUGE trend this spring). The shoulder grazing feather earrings are the ideal accent to this ethereal look. The neutral color-blocking look is convenient for those who don’t have an exceptional amount of bright colors in their wardrobe; after all, what savvy woman doesn’t already own a pair of nude pumps?

MODA Executive Board/Designer Arianna shows off her resplendent take on color blocking. She smartly paired a hot pink button-up with a cerulean blue shift dress. What really stand out are her bold accessories – her leopard wedges match her thin leopard belt, which is in the same color family as her necklace. Her vibrant head wrap has a capricious print that highlights the pink notes from the blouse, and the oversized bow is up to date with current trends. Our Polyvore version uses the shoe as its color-blocked piece, and the rest of the outfit is color-coordinated from those three vigorous base colors.

Hopefully we have given you sufficient inspiration for your color-blocked outfit. Always remember: when color-blocking, stick to a family of a maximum of 5 complimentary colors (including accessories) to avoid looking un-coordinated.
