A Gift from the Big Apple
My husband surprised me with a subscription to The Strand’s The Book HookUp after our first visit to New York City in 2018. It was the perfect present, considering our memorable stop at The Strand bookstore. What makes this subscription special is its quarterly nature, which means it’s not a huge commitment.
What’s in the Box?
The Book HookUp box, shipped out in March, June, September, and December (or Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter), contains two books: a signed, currently hyped book and an advanced reader copy. Alongside the books, it also includes other bookish and local goodies.
The Delights of the Spring Box
My Spring box was filled with delightful and scrumptious items.
Choose Your Own Adventure
While I received the young adult box, there is a range of options available, including fiction, classics, and sci-fi. However, the prices may vary for some of the boxes. Additionally, the website provides a spoiler link, allowing subscribers to get a sneak peek at the main title of their next box—I can never resist taking a look!
Let’s See What’s Inside
Inside my box, I discovered:
The Books
In this particular box, I received a signed hardback of Alice Oseman’s Loveless. Although I haven’t read any books by Oseman yet, I do have the first two Heartstopper books patiently waiting on my shelf. Another exciting addition was an advanced copy of S. Isabelle’s debut novel, The Witchery. This young adult tale, set at a school in Florida, had not caught my attention before, but it sounds truly enchanting.
Loveless Synopsis:
For fans of Love, Simon and I Wish You All the Best, Loveless is a funny, honest, and completely relatable story about a girl who discovers love can be found in many ways beyond sex or romance. From the talented author of Heartstopper comes a remarkable YA novel that explores the idea that it’s okay not to have sexual or romantic feelings for anyone. Georgia, the protagonist, finds herself unable to experience crushes, kisses, and make-outs like her friends. Surrounded by the notion that dating and sex equate to love, it isn’t until she reaches college that she comprehends the wide spectrum of LGBTQIA+ identities. As an asexual/aromantic individual, Georgia disrupts the narrative she grew up with, embarking on a journey of self-discovery and acceptance, with the support of her friends. Together, they question whether their reconnection was truly coincidental. Published on March 1, 2022.
The Witchery Synopsis:
A captivating debut by S. Isabelle, The Witchery is perfect for fans of Maggie Stiefvater, Zoraida Córdova, and Leigh Bardugo! Set in Haelsford, Florida—a town plagued by supernatural events—the story follows Logan, a young witch struggling to control her powers. As she begins her new school year at Mesmortes Coven Academy, she becomes intertwined with the infamous Red Three: Iris, a deathwitch determined to break the town’s curse; Jailah, a powerful witch with a hunger for more power; and Thalia, a talented greenwitch haunted by her past and on the run from her religious family. With fear and prejudice still lurking among humans and witches, they must unite during the Haunting Season, when the Wolves rise from the swamp to feed. As two Hammersmitt boys prepare to offer sacrifices for protection, they find themselves drawn into the Mesmortes witches’ plan to end the reign of terror imposed by the Wolves. However, they soon realize that breaking the curse may come at a greater cost than anyone could have imagined. Publishing on July 26, 2022.
Postcards
The box also contained Friendship Maintenance Postcards by Chronicle Books—a collection of 30 postcards that allow you to express how much you care. These cards are incredibly cute, fun, and detailed. 😉
Snacks
Reading wouldn’t be complete without some tasty treats!
In my Book HookUp box, I received Vanilla Corn Singles by Deanan Gourmet Popcorn and Nestle Rallies Nut Butter Bombs in Salted Cashew Butter and Brownie Almond Butter flavors—perfect reading companions.
Coffee
To complete the reading experience, the box included a 4 oz bag of Medium Roast Mocha Java coffee by the Brooklyn Roasting Company.
