The Perfume Store, a well-known British retailer, recently unveiled the top-selling fragrances for both women and men in 2021. Despite the challenging times, classics have reigned supreme, capturing the hearts of fragrance enthusiasts across Britain.
Seeking Familiarity in Uncertain Times
The closure of physical stores and a staggering 164% surge in online sales have influenced consumer behavior. Unable to test and try products in-store, shoppers gravitated towards tried-and-tested scents, seeking comfort in the familiar. With three products in the top ten, Chanel emerged as Britain’s favorite perfume brand. However, the overall bestsellers are targeted towards men: Dior Sauvage and Bleu De Chanel.
“In recent history, we have experienced turbulent times, and our sales data reflects that our customers find solace in what they know – classic scents that have attained cult status,” shared Athina Macpherson, Head of Brand at The Perfume Store. “In times of uncertainty, our favorite nostalgic fragrance is akin to slipping into an old cardigan. It offers warmth, reassurance, comfort, and peace of mind.”
The Allure of Woody and Floral Notes
The popular fragrances also share similar olfactory profiles – a combination of woody and floral notes. The Perfume Store reports that many woody fragrances exude a traditionally masculine vibe, but the inclusion of floral accords adds a feminine touch, striking a perfect balance.
“People adore the power that woody fragrances possess. They are known to evoke a sense of grounding and down-to-earthiness, which is exactly what we have all longed for during these uncertain times,” added Macpherson.
