Top 10 urban fiction books

The top 10 urban fiction books: We all know that we can sometimes find a good book in genres we don’t usually read. So, here are the top 10 urban fiction books that you will absolutely love.

1. The Coldest Winter Ever

Author: Sister Souljah Concept of story: A book about how a person grew up in the ghetto and what they learned through their experiences. Summary of plot: This is a realistic book about growing up in the ghetto under harsh conditions with no one to depend on but yourself. Vivian has to face many adversities in life, which makes her tough. However, she also knows when it’s time to give up fighting for something that is hopeless because she wants better things out of life too much.  How well written is the story? Overall, very well written. There are some areas where the story drags on too long, but it’s minor. This is not a super unrealistic book, but also not so realistic that it makes you want to give up on life either. The story seems real enough to be interesting but not too real where the reader gets depressed or tired of reading about someone else’s struggles. Are characters three dimensional? Yes Are their flaws? Yes Does the author handle those flaws well? Very much so

2. Thug Lovin’

Author: Wahida Clark Concept of story: Love/hate triangle between two women who are both engaged to one man Summary of plot: This book is about Envy and Sasha’s love/hate relationship with each other as they fight over Romeo. Although Sasha appears to have all the money, power, and clothes she needs, Envy talks about all the luxuries that she doesn’t have. The story mostly follows Envy as she tries to be with Romeo even though he is engaged to Sasha. How well written is the story? This is probably my favorite book of this genre, but it’s also considered one of the most poorly written books in this subcategory. The author writes too many details which takes away from the story. There are pointless paragraphs of detailed descriptions that serve no purpose other than to make your eyes glaze over because you’re bored out of your mind reading it. Are characters three dimensional? No Are their flaws? Yes Does the author handle those flaws well? Not really

3. Baby Momma Drama

Author: Dwayne S. Joseph Concept of story: Book about a love triangle between three people, two women and one man Summary of plot: This is the sequel to Envy. The author’s style changed in this book because it follows Sasha instead, but it still falls under the same category since there are hateful feelings between both women. How well written is the story? This is one of my favorite books in this category because it actually has a real plot that makes sense unlike most stories following this storyline. However, there are times when you wonder what’s going on with all the back-and-forth drama between everyone involved in the love triangles. Are characters three dimensional? No Are their flaws? Yes Does the author handle those flaws well? Not really

4. Repent, Thugs!

Author: Wahida Clark Concept of story: Story follows a group of friends who try to make it out of the ghetto by any means necessary Summary of plot: This book focuses on Troy and his close friendship with Bobby and their other friends. Troy and Bobby take two very different roads as they become adults. The first half of this book is more about Troy’s ups and downs as he tries to keep his nose clean while living in the ghetto. However, you will quickly learn that nothing can be done without paying for it even if you played by all the rules as a kid growing up in the neighborhood . How well written is the story? This seems like one of those books where at times there are too many unnecessary details with little substance in the story. There are also times when the storyline drags on too long, but overall it’s well written. Are characters three dimensional? No Are their flaws? Yes Does the author handle those flaws well? Not really

However, things don’t go as planned because Bobby has other ideas that he wants to work out before they are together again. Tasha learns the hard way that everything you love can also hurt you. How well written is the story? The book is very well written, but it’s sad to think women are still in abusive or controlling relationships because they feel like there isn’t anything better out there for them and this book shows how difficult making a clean break from such a relationship can be. 7. Playing for Keeps

Author: Dwayne S. Joseph Concept of story: A love triangle between two men who are brothers and a woman they both want to be with Summary of plot: I read this entire series because I couldn’t stop myself from wanting to know what happens next. The first thing that drew me in was the cover of the books because it looked like something interesting, but then I learned about the story line and couldn’t stop reading them until I finished. It’s a refreshing storyline to read about for once even though at times it gets confusing trying to remember all of the players involved. This book focuses on how Darius got involved with Nia after her husband died and Jaylon got involved with his brother’s girlfriend after they both lost their wives around the same time period.
