The Ultimate Autumn Reading List for 2023

by Assessor

I absolutely adore planning my Fall reading list, even more so than summer reads. My selection always consists of a delightful mix of books that perfectly capture the autumn atmosphere. From cozy and comforting reads to dark and moody fantasies, Gothic literature, and everything in between, these books make me want to curl up in a cozy sweater, sip tea by the window, and revel in the beauty of autumn.

What I crave most are those cozy autumn reads that make me feel the chill in the air, hear the crunch of leaves, and experience the essence of Fall. You know that distinctive autumn smell, crisp and invigorating.

But as October approaches, I find myself veering towards thrillers, spooky tales, and horror stories. There’s something exhilarating about feeling a chill down my spine and wrapping myself tighter in a blanket. In this state, my mind plays tricks on me, and I become fully immersed in the spine-tingling tales.

Dark Supernatural & Fantasy Books For Fall

In the Fall, I’m always in the mood for dark fantasy and paranormal/supernatural stories. Picture me curled up with a cozy blanket and a cup of tea, completely immersed in the mystical ambiance.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

This fantastical masterpiece, with its beautifully crafted prose, takes you on a journey to a dreamlike black and white circus. The atmosphere is enchanting and absolutely perfect for the season. If you appreciate magical writing and slower-paced books, this is an ideal companion for a cozy fall night.

House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A. Craig

Let me tell you about this book. It’s one of the best reads for October if you enjoy Gothic tales that are spooky and chilling but not overly scary. This dark fairytale about cursed sisters will transport you to a world where you can feel the sea with all your senses.

The Bone Houses by Emily Lloyd Jones

This book, an exquisite blend of darkness and poignancy, is the most remarkable zombie story I’ve ever encountered. Don’t be deterred by the term “zombies.” It’s a dark fantasy fairytale with an atmospheric setting and breathtaking writing that will capture your heart through its compelling characters.

Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin

I can’t resist dark atmospheric fantasy books like this one, especially when they involve witches. Join the journey of a witch on the run from her coven and her unexpected marriage of convenience to a witch hunter. Prepare yourself for an enemies-to-lovers romance that will warm your heart.

Fall Reads Perfect For Mystery & Thriller Lovers

For me, nothing quite compares to gothic mysteries when it comes to fall reading. The following books are set in atmospheric locations, filled with intrigue, and guaranteed to keep you enthralled.

In A Dark, Dark Wood by Ruth Ware

This gripping story takes place in a mysterious countryside house, complete with an enigmatic housekeeper reminiscent of Mrs. Danvers from Rebecca. Immerse yourself in this atmospheric setting, and for an extra touch of ambiance, I highly recommend the audiobook version.

The Secret History by Donna Tartt

Ask any fall reading enthusiast, and they’ll tell you that this dark academia novel is an absolute must-read. Set on a New England college campus, it combines the allure of autumn with a literary murder mystery that will leave you spellbound.

The Lady Sherlock series by Sherry Thomas

Although not strictly cozy mysteries, these gender-swapped Sherlock retellings have a cozy feel to them. Settle down with these autumn books, and prepare to be captivated by the growth of the characters throughout the series.

Still Life by Louise Penny

If you’re looking for a charming and literary cozy mystery series, look no further. This delightful series is like wrapping yourself in a warm blanket while sipping a cup of tea. You’ll fall in love with the cozy small town and its memorable residents.

The Whisper Man by Alex North

This chilling thriller is one of the best books to read in October. It’s a slow-burn crime novel with dark suspense that explores the complex dynamics of father-son relationships. Set in a town haunted by a famous serial killer, who lured children out of their windows, the eerie atmosphere will keep you on the edge of your seat.

The Beekeeper’s Apprentice by Laurie R. King

Immerse yourself in this cozy mystery series featuring a retired Sherlock Holmes and his intelligent young apprentice. The dynamic between the two characters takes center stage as they encounter a new villain.

Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson

This YA mystery series is an absolute must-read. Follow a girl’s quest to solve a cold case at her new school, only to discover that the perpetrator may still be lurking. It’s the perfect autumn read to pique your curiosity.

Cozy Autumn / Fall Books To Read

If you’re looking for cozy reads that embrace the spirit of fall without venturing into the realm of scary, these books are perfect for you.

Books That Evoke the Essence of Fall

When it comes to books that perfectly encapsulate the essence of fall, anything by Kate Morton fits the bill. Her books, such as The Forgotten Garden, The Distant Hours, and The House at Riverton, transport you to a world that simply exudes autumn vibes.

Classic Books To Read In Autumn

One classic that deserves a spot on your fall reading list is The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte. This literary gem captures the essence of autumn beautifully with its captivating story.

Conclusion

I hope this ultimate autumn reading list brings you joy and inspiration as you dive into the world of fall-themed literature. Whether you’re in the mood for dark fantasies, gripping mysteries, or cozy tales, these books will keep you entertained throughout September, October, and November.
