A Solid Entry to the Truck Market
Chevrolet wasted no time getting the 2007 Silverado to market (“Pull-Ahead Program,” AW, Nov. 6, 2006). However, that doesn’t mean they compromised on quality. The latest versions of this beloved truck have been meticulously crafted, leaving no detail overlooked.
A Strong Foundation for Reliable Performance
Built on the well-received GMT 900 SUV frame, the Silverado starts with a sturdy base. Modifications to the frame from the A-pillar back enable the pickups to handle larger loads when compared to their SUV counterparts. Our test model came equipped with the Z85 suspension package, which strikes a balance between handling and trailering capabilities, with a slight lean toward trailering. Some of our editors, after traversing rough washboard roads, longed for the smoother ride of our long-term Suburban. Nevertheless, the Silverado sets the benchmark for handling and ride quality among its half-ton truck competitors.
Tow with Confidence, Haul with Ease
Our test truck’s combination of the 5.3-liter V8 engine, 3.73 gear ratio, and Z85 suspension package results in an impressive maximum towing capacity of 7500 pounds. Although we didn’t have the opportunity to test its towing prowess, we successfully loaded various cargo into the capacious short box. From a Jeep axle to IKEA furniture, the Silverado effortlessly accommodated everything we threw at it, with room to spare.
Conquer Any Weather Conditions
During our testing period, a Midwestern snowstorm hit, and we were grateful for the four-wheel-drive option. Snowfall of up to eight inches posed no challenge for the Silverado’s electronically controlled Autotrac 4wd system. With automatic 4wd engaged, we never had to worry about shifting between rear- and four-wheel drive as the road conditions changed. The system operated seamlessly and flawlessly, instilling confidence in every situation.
Interior Comfort and Convenience
The interior of the LT2 model resembles that of the previous generation, but it has been updated with superior materials and enhanced components. The stereo and climate control systems are intelligently designed and boast clean lines, eliminating the cheap button look of its predecessors. We appreciated the inclusion of the iPod jack and XM satellite radio. The quiet ride and significant reduction in wind noise were definite winners among our staff.
Innovations from Bumper to Bumper
Chevy has truly gone the extra mile with the Silverado’s upgrades, extending all the way to the bed. The truck offers an optional cargo management system, along with multiple storage containers, facilitating hassle-free organization of loose items. While the EZ Lift tailgate, which closes with minimal effort, seems more like a gimmick than a substantial feature, a dampened tailgate, similar to those found on Toyota Tundras or Nissan Titans, would be a more practical addition. Raising a tailgate is no trouble, but gently lowering one can be a challenge.
Well-Equipped and Worth the Investment
With a price tag approaching $41,000, the Silverado seems to provide everything we need and more. While heated washer fluid may not be a top priority for pickup truck buyers, the $595 convenience package, coupled with the remote starter’s impressive 195-foot range, justifies its cost. Seat heaters would be a welcomed addition to the convenience package, and their absence did elicit a few complaints.
A Truck That Delivers on Its Promises
Last December, we had the opportunity to test a two-wheel-drive extended-cab Silverado, which came in at a more modest $31,700 with ample options. However, that model also lacked heated seats. Perhaps we can anticipate their inclusion in a future test truck come August.
A Home Run in the Truck Segment
Living up to the tremendous hype surrounding its release, the Silverado truly deserves the title of Truck of the Year awarded earlier this year. The competition in this segment is already fierce and will only intensify as Toyota releases its Tundras onto the streets. As one editor aptly put it, “This beauty is simply rock-solid, quiet, and smooth.” We consider the Silverado to be a resounding success.
