“Squid Game” Season 2: Release Date
According to Hwang Dong-hyuk, we shouldn’t expect the new season to premiere until 2024. While it’s already being said that there might be a third season in the works, the script for season two is still in its early stages. It seems we’ll have to practice patience while waiting for the return of this gripping series.
On February 26, 2023, Netflix Spain got everyone talking on Twitter with the release of a teaser poster for the second season. Unfortunately, the poster was accompanied by the frustrating caption, “Coming soon.”
“Squid Game” Season 2: Synopsis
Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed, “Gi-hun will return and do something for the world.” This comes as no surprise, considering the open-ended finale of the first season when our protagonist chose not to board the plane that would have taken him and his daughter away. Instead, he received news about the creators of the infamous game.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the creator mentioned that he has only three pages of ideas planned for the central storyline of the new script. However, he hasn’t started writing it yet, so the process will take some time.
“The participants’ humanity will be tested once again through these games,” said Hwang, hinting at the series’ return. The concept of players uniting to survive as a group was left open-ended in the first season, and Hwang wants to explore it further in the upcoming episodes. He poses the question, “Is true solidarity between humans possible?”
In a previous interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hwang expressed his interest in exploring “some other stories from the series that haven’t been addressed” in the first season. He mentioned the story of the policeman and his brother, the proxy. If he goes ahead with the second season, he would like to delve into their dynamic. He also mentioned the possibility of exploring the story of the suited recruiter who played ddakji with Gi-hun and gave him the card in the first episode.
“There are many possibilities for the stories in the second season,” Hwang added. While he didn’t disclose specifics, it’s clear that the next season holds great potential for further development.
“Squid Game” Season 2: Cast
Hwang recently confirmed that two characters are guaranteed to return: Gi-hun and the Leader. Gi-hun, portrayed by Park Hae-soo, was the lone survivor of the Squid Game trials. Instead of leaving for the US to reunite with his daughter, he was driven by a greater purpose to end the deadly games. The Leader, played by Lee Byung-hun under the mask, personally supervised the 456 cash-strapped players who lost their lives in the sinister Olympics.
Joining them in Season 2 are four confirmed new faces: Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon, and Yang Dong-geun. While their roles in the new season haven’t been announced yet, their presence adds to the excitement.
In mid-March, Hwang dropped a female name: HoYeon Jung, who portrayed Kang Sae-byeok, the deceased Player 067. Hwang hinted that she might return as her twin sister.
Although the theory of a twin sister is thrilling, some fans believe that Player 067 might have escaped from the coffin before the fire consumed her, making her possible survival a tantalizing possibility.
Another character who may make a comeback is the police officer, Hwang Jun-ho, who fell into the sea after being shot by his brother, yet his body was never found.
“While writing the first season, I thought about the stories that could be explored in the second season. One would be the story of the Leader and the detective. I believe that the issue with police officers is not just a problem in Korea. I see in global news that the police force can take a long time to act in certain situations, resulting in more victims or the situation worsening due to their lack of prompt action. This was a topic I wanted to address. Perhaps in season two, I can delve into it further,” Hwang explained.
With the confirmation of the returning cast and intriguing new additions, fans eagerly await the arrival of “Squid Game” Season 2. Be sure to catch up on the first season and stay tuned for more updates on this gripping series brought to you by Ratingperson.
