Pedal fishing kayaks have skyrocketed in popularity in recent years. They are especially favored for fishing because they allow you to move the boat freely while keeping your hands available. However, one drawback of pedal kayaks is the wide price range, from $1,600 to over $5,500! Perception aimed to provide a high-quality pedal fishing kayak at an affordable price with the Showdown. As someone who usually prefers paddling, I decided to give the Perception Showdown a try and see if it’s worth the investment. Let’s go over the basics and then dive into my thoughts on key aspects.
About the Perception Showdown 11.5
- Price: $2,129 USD
- Length: 11′ 6″
- Width: 36″
- Weight: 90 lbs (41 kg)
- Capacity: 450 lbs (204 kg)
The Showdown features a raised frame-seat with a storage compartment underneath. It also has dual rod holders on both sides, four sturdy handles (one on each end, one on each side), and the side handles double as gear tracks for adding accessories. In terms of storage, there’s a removable and portable bow pod, and the stern tank well includes bungees and is ready for a crate. As a pedal fishing kayak, it naturally includes hand controls for operating the rudder.
Side Note on Safety:
Before sharing my personal thoughts on the Perception Showdown, I want to give a shout-out to the American Canoe Association (ACA) free online paddling course. Although it’s tempting to skip over these things, I highly recommend taking the time to check it out. Paddling is generally safe and enjoyable, but when things go wrong, they can escalate quickly. A bit of key information can make the difference between a minor inconvenience and a disaster. Did I mention it’s free? How Portable is the Perception Showdown 11.5?
Well, 90 pounds is quite the load to carry. Compared to some fishing kayaks that can weigh up to 120 pounds, the Showdown is relatively manageable. However, it’s highly recommended to consider using a kayak cart or bring along some strong buddies for assistance. Ideally, if you have a trailer to tow this behemoth and prioritize sites with a boat launch, you can avoid the hassle of dragging the Showdown to and from the water.
Is the Perception Showdown Stable?
This kayak was purposefully designed to provide a stable platform for fishing. And it delivers on that promise splendidly. The high-position seat offers an excellent vantage point, but it also raises the center of gravity significantly. Nevertheless, there is absolutely no hint of instability. The elevated seating position also makes standing up a breeze, and the boat feels rock-solid. With its 36-inch-wide platform, the Showdown delivers stability, stability, and more stability.
How Does the Perception Showdown Kayak Perform?
Typically, wide and stable kayaks sacrifice speed. The Perception Showdown follows this trend. However, I expected it, so I wasn’t disappointed. No one has found a magical formula to defy the laws of physics (yet!). That being said, considering its chunky build, the pedal-drive system propels it surprisingly well.
Is a Pedal Fishing Kayak Maneuverable?
Using a paddle in conjunction with the built-in pedal and steering system makes turning the 11.5-foot Showdown feel like handling a shorter kayak. The pedal and steering system alone doesn’t provide quick turns or tight radiuses. Given its water displacement, it’s understandable that it’s not the most nimble boat. So, future Showdown owners should keep in mind that using a paddle to make sharp turns is necessary. Having a paddle on hand is always a good idea, especially if you plan to stand up. It’s far from a deal-breaker.
Is the Perception Showdown Comfortable?
Absolutely! The suspension seat is like a heavenly cushion for your backside, and the low-lumbar support provides great comfort. Even during extended pedaling, I felt secure and at ease. When fatigue sets in, the reclined position practically invites a quick nap. The exceptional stability of the Showdown comes into play here as well. Whether I was pedaling, relaxing, or stretching while standing, there was no wobbling whatsoever, allowing for complete relaxation.
How Are the Features on the Perception Showdown?
First and foremost, the pedal system impressed me. It operates smoothly and effortlessly in both forward and reverse directions. However, it’s worth noting that the pedals don’t retract, so if you collide with anything underwater, they will bear the brunt of the impact. Avoid shallow, rocky waters to prevent any potential damage.
The removable storage pod is a neat feature. It allows for convenient loading and unloading in the garage or storage area without having to be near the bulkier kayak.
The side handles doubling as gear tracks are a clever use of space. When paddling, accessories on the side would usually hinder your stroke, but in a pedal kayak, there’s no need to worry about that. These features offer great versatility.
One optional add-on that I found useful was the soft-shelled storage unit that clips onto the side of the seat. It’s the perfect size for a tackle box or any other small items you want to keep close by. Additionally, it served as a comfortable hand rest while cruising and steering with my opposite arm.
The only feature that didn’t wow me was the junk drawer under the seat. It neither hindered nor enhanced the experience, but I found it a bit small and flimsy. Perhaps it becomes more relevant during prolonged fishing sessions.
Is the Perception Showdown 11.5 Worth It?
It depends on who’s asking. This kayak caters to a specific niche. Not everyone values a heavy, pedal-driven kayak at this price point. However, those in the market for this type of boat will appreciate the Perception Showdown 11.5’s value. Despite having numerous high-quality features, it remains on the more affordable end of the pedal fishing kayak spectrum. If you’re a passionate angler seeking a stable, comfortable, and hands-free craft, I’m confident that you’ll find tremendous value in this kayak.
