A Premium Truck Topper – Reviewing the Snugtop Super Sport Truck Bed Cap for the 3rd Gen Tacoma
A few months ago, I realized that I needed a suitable cover for the bed of my 2017 Tacoma TRD Sport 4X4. After extensively searching on Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace, I decided to visit a local camper shell dealership to explore the features I wanted.
After a brief sales pitch and some friendly negotiation, I left with a SnugTop Super Sport installed on my truck, and I couldn’t be happier!
Key Features:
- Frameless, glass pop-out side windows
- Carpeted interior
- Overhead light
- Sliding front window that folds down
Where to Find It Online:
This cap provides secure and lockable storage space, a shelter while car camping, and the potential for extra roof rack space, among other benefits.
Since 1965, SnugTop has been delivering a range of truck caps and tonneau covers. With this reputation in mind, I was confident in my choice. I’ve been using the Super Sport on my double cab short bed (DCSB) for the past three months, embarking on everything from long highway drives to sleeping in the back to moderate off-roading.

Features
With various companies offering shells (SnugTop, Leer, Century), each with several models and features, finding the right cap for your truck can be overwhelming.
The extensive range of hard shell features can make decision-making challenging, especially given the cost implications. Prices for caps can range from $1900 to $3500, depending on the company and model. SnugTop’s Super Sport falls on the higher end of the spectrum, although pricing may vary at local dealerships. To save some money, consider looking for a used shell on platforms like Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist.
Let me break down the features I think are most important and what you should consider before investing in a cap for your Tacoma.
Windows
On the Super Sport, the side windows have sections at the back that pop out, allowing some airflow into the bed space. They don’t have sliding windows, and only the rear sections crack open. If you anticipate needing access to items near the front of the bed, being able to reach in through the side windows is crucial, although it is not possible with this particular model.
Height
Hard shells come in two height categories: cab-high and high-rise. Cab-high shells, like the Super Sport, match the height of your cab. High-rise caps are taller than the cab, providing more space in the bed. Personally, I prefer the sleek look of the cab-high design, but I have experienced some unfortunate moments of head-bumping while camping, which could have been avoided with a high-rise option.
Price
The price of caps can vary depending on the company and model you choose. Generally, the price falls within the range of $1900 to $3500. The Super Sport leans toward the higher end, but local dealership pricing may differ. Keep an eye out for used options on platforms like Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, and other second-hand sales websites.
PROS & CONS
PROS
One of the main highlights of the Super Sport is its sleek and clean look. Thanks to the frameless windows, this cap avoids any bulky or unnecessary features. Personally, I find the cab-high shell much more aesthetically pleasing compared to other options.
Another aspect I appreciate is the carpeted interior, providing insulation and maintaining the internal temperature when camping. It also eliminates the risk of condensation buildup. Additionally, it works well with velcro, allowing you to stick items like homemade bug screens to the inside.
The security provided by this shell is one of the primary reasons I chose it over a soft topper. Being able to lock the shell ensures peace of mind, knowing that your belongings are safe in the bed.
Lastly, the weather-resistant nature of a hard shell is a significant advantage, keeping all your gear dry during rain or snow. This is particularly useful for camping since a rooftop tent on bed racks would require storing important items inside the cab in case of rain. The hard shell also enables comfortable stealth camping in places like Walmart parking lots when traveling between remote locations.
CONS
While I could go on about the SuperSport’s merits, it’s not a perfect fit for everyone.
The most significant downside is the price tag. I was quoted $3400 at one of the local dealerships, which can be quite challenging to swallow. However, I lucked out because the dealership had ordered this specific cap for another customer who had backed out. Since it matched my 3rd gen Tacoma short bed in the same color, the dealership knocked $1000 off the price. If it weren’t for this price drop, I probably wouldn’t have chosen this model. If you’re intrigued by the product but hesitant due to the cost, keep an eye out on platforms like Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, and other second-hand sales websites for used options.
Another significant drawback is that the side windows of this SnugTop model do not pop out. Consequently, when small items slide to the front of the bed, I have to crawl in and retrieve them. A sliding side window that pops out would have made this much easier. However, I resolved this issue by constructing drawers for smaller items, enabling smooth retrieval and optimal bed utilization.
One minor consideration is the weight. Like any heavy load in your truck bed, it may cause the rear end of your Tacoma to sag to some degree. When I initially installed the shell, I already had a 2″ leveling kit installed in the front. However, after fitting the cap, I noticed rear-end sagging. I decided to lift the rear to level it out, which resolved the issue. Nevertheless, it’s worth considering the weight factor.

Final Thoughts
Considering the price, I can’t recommend this option to every truck owner I know. However, if you’re searching for a reliable solution for stealth camping or secure and weather-resistant storage space in your bed, this is an excellent product, provided you can handle the hefty price tag or find one used.
In conclusion, I am 100% satisfied with my purchase of the SnugTop Super Sport. After using it both on and off-road, as well as sleeping under it multiple times, I have no regrets.
