When choosing the song for your First Dance, I personally think that above all else the song should be representative of your relationship and that you should have a personal connection with the song. Whether that be a classic like Etta James’ “At Last”, something a bit more modern and upbeat like Meghan Trainor + John Legend’s “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” or something more non-traditional like Michael Buble’s “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”, I am a huge advocate of choosing songs that speak to you as a couple! There is no right or wrong when it comes to choosing this song. Of course, it does help if you can dance to it. 😉
Having said that, if you’re still uncertain of which song to choose and have exhausted every online list covering all of the “most popular” first dance songs and still haven’t clicked with anything. I’ve put together a handful of songs below that I’ve run across recently. These songs have been released within the last few months to a year and I personally think are absolutely beautiful and worth giving a listen.
- Chuck Wicks: “Always”
- Thomas Rhett: “Die A Happy Man”
- Russell Dickerson: “Yours”
- Adele: “Remedy”
- Ed Sheeran: “How Would You Feel”
- And my current absolute favorite, Ed Sheeran: “Perfect”

Maybe you have a favorite love song already but fear it’s been “overly used” – which I personally think is silly, if you and your partner love the song then it’s perfect; plain and simple! However, if you are concerned about it, a great option would be to research covers of the song. There are some incredibly beautiful and completely revamped versions of our favorite “first dance songs” and that’s a great way to keep it “fresh” while sticking with a classic (I mean, they’re “classics” for a reason right?!) For example:
- Sara Niemietz does a beautiful version of Etta James’ “At Last”
- I love Jasmine Thompson’s version of “Like I’m Gonna Lose You”
- There are literally thousands of beautiful covers just waiting to be discovered!
Or better yet, have a friend with pipes? Ask them if they would sing your first dance song live, talk about making the moment even more special and more memorable!
