Performance Comparison
Glide and Tracking
The Jackson Staxx is a sit-on-top kayak measuring 10 feet and 8 inches in length, with a width of 33 inches. It features a raised seat with a sturdy metal frame. Weighing 64 pounds, it offers two storage compartments – one sealed dry and the other open, secured with a bungee cord.
The Staxx, in comparison to other recreational kayaks we tested, has an average length. However, it stands out as one of the widest in the lineup, with a relatively flat hull. This design doesn’t lend itself to fast gliding, requiring a few extra strokes to reach full speed. While it may not be the fastest kayak on the water, its wide design provides excellent stability and ensures it moves in the intended direction.
Stability
When it comes to stability, the Jackson Staxx is a top performer. Not only is it stable to sit on, but it also allows users to comfortably stand, making it ideal for activities such as fishing. Testers found it incredibly stable, even with vigorous movements. Its superior stability makes it a fun option for jumping into the water and easy to get back onto. Those who enjoy recreational activities with their dogs will appreciate the stability and easy access this kayak offers.
Maneuverability
Due to its long and wide profile, the Staxx is not the most agile kayak. It takes longer to turn 360 degrees compared to the other kayaks we tested. Additionally, it performs sluggishly in our timed slalom course, mainly due to its multi-chimed hull profile.
Given its open-seat design, maneuverability is slightly compromised as there is less connectivity with the kayak. However, this doesn’t mean you won’t be able to steer the kayak; it just requires a few extra strokes. In the event of tipping over or encountering large splashes of water, the self-bailing design ensures quick emptying. The Staxx also features large handles, making it easier to re-right the kayak, even though it is heavier than some other options.
Ease of Transport
Among the kayaks we tested, the Staxx is one of the heaviest. This can make carrying it to and from the river a bit challenging, as well as loading it onto a roof rack. However, it does come with ergonomic handles that make the task more bearable, particularly with assistance from another person. Those with kayak trailers will appreciate the convenience when hauling the Staxx to the beach. The rear hull also includes a replaceable skid plate, acknowledging that dragging this kayak may sometimes be necessary.
Comfort
The open design and raised seat of the Staxx contribute to its exceptional comfort. There is ample room to stretch your legs, making it a favorite among tall paddlers. The molded seat, elevated a few inches from the kayak’s surface, helps keep you dry from splashes or collected water. With ample on-deck storage and some dry in-deck storage, the Staxx is well-equipped for carrying essentials and a cooler, allowing you to enjoy relaxed river or ocean cruises.
Depending on your needs, the rear storage well can accommodate a child or a small dog. It can even handle the weight of an additional passenger without much difficulty.
Construction Quality
The Staxx’s shell is constructed from robust plastic, capable of handling more than the kayak is designed for. It boasts a conveniently placed internal storage hatch with a capacity of approximately 7.5 liters. However, we found that the lid of this hatch did not completely seal, causing some issues with moisture. Jackson advertises it as semi-dry storage, which could be improved.
The storage hatch on the Staxx tended to expand in hot weather and loosen in cooler conditions, often leading to the lid falling off unexpectedly. Without a security leash, it’s easy to misplace the lid. Considering the kayak’s overall volume, the deck’s dry storage space is relatively small, suitable only for small dry bags under 10 liters. The rear storage well offers considerably more space but lacks dry protection for your gear. While ample storage is available, we were disappointed by the lack of specifically dry storage options.
We also have concerns about the weight capacity of the seat. During our testing, it broke with a 185-pound paddler. However, replacement parts are available, and the seat straps can be upgraded to stronger buckles. The manufacturers have made several design features tailored to the needs of fishing enthusiasts, including convenient fishing pole management and the option to add a Staxx-specific fishing kit with deck pads, rod holders, tackle pouches, and gear racks.
Value
The Jackson Staxx kayak comes at a higher price point due to its robust build and impressive features. However, its storage capacity, versatility, and high load capacity make it an excellent choice for adventurers and those who want to bring along their furry friends. Its value goes beyond monetary worth, offering the freedom to embark on unforgettable journeys.
Conclusion
For those who prioritize stability and comfort, the Jackson Staxx kayak is an ideal choice. With ample on-deck and in-deck storage, it provides all the space you need to enjoy leisurely trips down rivers or along ocean channels. Its construction quality ensures resilience and reliability, while its design features cater to the needs of fishing enthusiasts. Explore the world of kayaking with the Jackson Staxx and experience unparalleled comfort on the water.
